Passages running through the brakes permits compressed air cooling, which provides optimum heat dissipation. This construction permits simultaneous power ratings of up to 3000 watts, or 5300 watts intermittent.

Use of the pre-loaded bearings permits operation at speeds of up to 25,000 rpm for an extended duration.

Magtrol's Hysteresis Brakes were built with large bores, but without a shaft or bearings. They are suitable for use in tension control for helical wrapping, braiding and other feed through applications. Utilization in machines involving manufacturing cable, wire, fiber optic cable, rope and tape, among others. The brakes allows seamless and reproducible torque, without influencing or depending on speed. Available maximum speed reaches 8000 rpm.

The brakes are built with two main components: a pole/case assembly and a rotor. The former is commonly mounted in a static position inside the machine, while the latter is shaft-mounted concentrically inside the pole/case assembly.

The components come in a variety of standard bore sizes and hole patters, also available based on customer requirements. However, some modifications may affect performance, such as larger bore size.

The unit is an EMP disc brake that has EMP powder which reacts to the variation of a magnetic field produced by a coil. Varying the viscosity of the EMP powder enables the user to manipulation the relay of torque between the primary rotor and the secondary rotor. When the secondary rotor is clamped to the structure of the unit, the element acts as a brake. When the secondary rot is free to turn, the element acts as a clutch.

The torque output of the unit is equal to the electric current. It provides a stable torque with minimal sound pressure levels and residuals. The model turns bidirectionally, and has a rapid response time. It also has a long service life.
