Excavating a tunnel is usually done by the combination of uni-function machines (for drilling the blasting holes, erecting the steel support or setting in rock bolts, spraying concrete and other operations).

In the NATM tunnel excavating operation, when the uni-function machines are placed in the direction of the tunnel, the overall length is over 600m, maximum, to reduce the effective tunnel width excessively, require many hours for moving those machines forward and backward and cause accidents due to the contact, insertion, etc.
Then, in recent years, a tunnel work station (tunnel driving plant) in which the heading point of a tunnel is used three-dimensionalls to reduce the number of machines for the intensive areas of operation, have seriously been investigated. As a result, a multifunction drilling machine on which other machines or devices are installed and which is different from a usual gantry jumbo, is being produced.
Recently the above-mentioned intensive drilling machine is named Tunnel Work Station (TWS) and it is being developed by the endeavors of the persons concerned.

Robbins Main Beam TBM has a complex design but uses a very easy concept. These are ideal for rocks with competent to slightly fractured formations. Machines can be designed to suit tunnel specifications in diameters ranging from 3 to 15 m or 10 to 50 ft.

The tunnel diameter is matched by a rotating cutterhead, which is the TBM’s front. Disc cutters, with diameters ranging from 11" to 20", are held by the cutterhead. The cutters are placed to ensure perfect boring of the rock type. Upon turning of the cutterhead, the cutters are pushed into the rock by hydraulic propel cylinders. When this high thrust is transferred via the rolling disc cutters, it leads to fractures of rock. This leads to breakage of chips away from the tunnel face.

As the propel cylinders extend, a floating gripper is pushed on the sidewalls and is locked in place. This enables advancing of TBM by the main beam. Continuous steering of the machine is possible when gripper shoes are pushed on the sidewalls to react the forward thrust of the machine.

It is also used to provide support as the swivelling cutterhead chops off the rock. During normal operation, the gripper shoes are activated, enabling them to push against the tunnel walls.

The telescopic shield covers everything underneath the machine. The shield extends, which gives provides protection to the components from the ground. The segment erector is attached to the gripper shield for the erection of conrcete tunnel lining segments. Also, the gripper shield is idle while operation is ongoing.

Thsi equipment consists of a telescopic sheild, which is a small inner shield that slides inside a bigger one, a tail shield, and a gripper shield.

These models have special shields that are sealed against the pressure of water inflow up to 10bar. They control tunnel face stability and ground surface subsidence by means of monitoring and adjusting the cutter-head chamber pressure. A balance is thus achieved with the pressure in front of the cutter-head. The working area inside of the machine is entirely sealed against water pressure of the surrounding ground. Fluidized muck in front of the bulkhead and behind the cutter-head is eliminated with a screw conveyor.

The apparatus is welded to the lead hull, and can be operated with any auger boring machine with a size from 36in to 72in (1.8m).
