The V6 engine version named HP (High Power) has been specifically designed with the target to top the performance of this engine family with no compromise on fuel economy and emissions. Having achieved the target, this diesel engine is now the most powerful single turbo diesel engine in the market worldwide, with 200kW @4000 rpm.
The use of a Variable geometry turbo with ball bearing technology, coupled with 2000 bar Common rail injection system and steel exhaust manifold manufactured with air gap technology made this achievement possible.
The ball bearing turbo is based on ceramic ball bearing supporting the turbo shaft, instead of the more traditional oil lubricated bearing, obtaining a lower friction and a much faster response in terms of time and torque, during transient state at low rpm (time to boost), and a reduction of fuel consumption at full load.
The 2000 bar injection system, featuring the very latest injector model CRI2-20, ensures the top performance in terms of power, torque, fuel economy and noise.
The extreme performance achieved required a special design of exhaust manifold, manufactured with ultra-high strength stainless steel AISI 309, with limited weight and size. The manifold is formed by two steel layers separated by an air gap, hence the name of air gap manufacturing technology.

The A 428 DOHC is the evolution of VM's current 2.8L 4 cylinder engine and features a number of significant improvements.
In order to meet the ever more stringent emission limits and market demands for high performance, the engine has been fitted with the most advanced technical solutions. In particular, the 1800 bar Common Rail injection system has been equipped with electric piezo injectors which guarantee perfect management of the injection parameters by allowing up to 5 consecutive injections at 230 microsecond intervals.
Plastic intake manifold with swirl control device and a new cooled EGR system with cooler by-pass ensure the best combustion efficiency, keeping emissions and noise under full control at the lowest possible level.

This is the first family of VM engines utilizing the Common Rail injection system. The base engine, developed in the mid '90s, turned out to be the longest-lasting VM product, maintaining the most advanced technology, over the years, up to the current Euro 5 version. Several years back, the production volume target of 300,000 engine produced was achieved and this amount is still growing, thanks to the best in class technologies utilized in the original design.
Product reliability and durability, refined and guaranteed by the large volumes in the field, is one of the major quality of the series. Flexibility in both application and installation enables the use on different vehicles, from SUV to MPV, from Light Duty Truck to off-road vehicles, with different installation patterns and functional objectives: from excellent fuel economy to powerful performance, from low NVH to perfect drivability.
Major technical features are: 4 valves per cylinder, driven by double overhead camshaft arrangement, options of FGT and VGT turbocharger with intercooler, 1600 bar CR injection system, cooled EGR system and balance shaft.
A 2.5L version of the same engine completes the family. They share all components except pistons, liner and crankshaft.
