Torque limiter - SOTL / ATT

The Safety Output Torque Limiter (SOTL/ATT) is a safety device manufactured by Italplant for placement on the motor's input shaft. The limiter makes use of the Italplant-patented SOTL system, designed for protecting machines and operators from "jamming" of the body against the dial plate.

The limiter is positioned at the opening of the gearbox, serving only to protect the main organ transmission, the indexer, and its cam followers, which are the weakest indexer parts. This does not protect the machine nor the people in contact with the stations.

Safety of the input shaft in the gearbox is only brought about by the indexer during instances of panic stops and machine restart, in an operating stage involving equal coefficients of maximum acceleration and the law of motion indexer.

The system discharges the load of the disc when a particular amount of torque is reached. This is enabled by the internal springs of the device, as it provides an axial force which connects to the surfaces of the two parts.

Sliding clutches provide an ideal means of overload protection when connecting two shafts. The units consist of a normal sliding hub with a plate wheel as a centre plus an additional hub sprocket.

The drive and output end are connected by means of a positive, but low elasticity, fit using a DIN-standard (BS) double roller chain. A standard connecting link is supplied with every clutch. Sliding clutches ensure a consistent slip torque, low maintenance, easy installation and simple release of the shaft connection. They are deployed as an overload protection means whenever slight parallel or angular offsetting of the two connected shafts cannot be avoided. Permitted alignment errors for the individual sizes are specified in the table.
