The 28AT dry gas seal is a standard choice that has been used in gas-handling turbo-machinery applications for more than 40 years. John Crane makes many of these gas seals with the spiral groove pattern to prevent them from contacting other parts while in operation.

The mating ring and seat, and the primary ring/face bodies will keep a sealing gap of about 0.0002 inches per five microns, thus preventing parts from wearing out. The seals will keep seal oil contamination from being a threat and also keep maintenance costs and downtime from being a problem. Double, single and tandem seals may be ordered as required.

The Type 28VL, which is manufactured by John Crane, is a non-contact, dry gas seal which is suitable to use in vaporizing fluids. The unit is also suitable to eliminate problems such as dry-running wear, and vapor lock in the seal chamber.

The gas seal utilizes that rotational energy produced by the pump shaft to vaporize the process liquid at a controlled rate, generating a stable gas film which lubricates the face of the seal. The unit operates with a pressure limit of 124 bar per seal face, and a speed limit of 180 m/s.

The series has dry-running gas seals that were specially made for gas-handling turbomachinery. It is equipped with a patented spiral groove system that ensures no contact between the seals during operation. It has a mating ring/seat with primary ring/face within 0.0002"/5 microns, effectively eliminating wear.

Single and double seal arrangements are available to reduce the oil contamination and costs.

Type 83 is a carbon-bushing assembly, dual-segmented, which the manufacturer has designed to prevent bearing oil migration to the dry gas seal cartridge. Note that the item is normally applied as a double arrangement with an inert buffer gas.

It can be used in combination with a type 28 dry-running gas seal to achieve impressive results, such as total sealing for ensuring separation of process gas and bearing oil in compressors.
