structural dynamic monitoring

Scientific observation through structural monitoring plays a fundamental role in diagnostics as it represents the essential source when trying to find out the origins of any instability. In fact, the knowledge of the behaviour of a structure, either in use or during seismic events, has recently turned into being the very basis on which the adoption of effective actions, capable to mitigate the effects of natural disasters on both structures and their users, is placed.

Such considerations highlights how structural monitoring is necessary in most applications in the field of Civil Engineering such as designing acitivities, assessment of damage, reinforcing of existing structures and control of structures exposed to natural events. Indeed, any application field can take advantage of the study of the dynamic behaviour of a structure.

A typical architecture of a dynamic monitoring system includes terminal sensors (like accelerometers, geophones etc.) connected via cables to a central data logger unit. The task of such a unit is to collect, store and process a huge number of dynamic readings varying according to the type of sensor being utilised.

In short, monitoring systems can advantageously be used to create a database which stores significant readings over the whole life of a structure, available to any operator who is expected to interact with it.
