Bowman presents marine heat exchangers. There are three techniques used for water-cooled marine petrol and diesel engines, which include direct cooling, heat exchanger cooling and keel cooling.

When cylinders and heads employ the direct cooling method with sea water, it produces mediocre results. This is because the engine, which in all likelihood supports radiator cooling as per its original design, will run cold. This will result in destruction of the cylinder block and heads by the sea water.

For small-sized boats running in shallow or weedy water, keel cooling is ideal. However, it faces a serious limitation due to its requirement of pipework outside the hull.

The most widely used method is heat exchanger cooling. The sea water is segregated in corrosion-resistant parts. It is possible to thermostatically control the closed fresh-water circuit to ensure engine operation at optimal temperature.

It uses a silent zone header tank that comes with a de-aeration feature and a filter cap, and an O-ring held detachable tube stack. This may expand or contract inside the housing.
