The controllers have the ability to operate in two modes, transition mode (TM) and continuous current mode (CCM). For applications requiring both the high current capability of CCM and the cost-effectiveness of TM, ST gives consumers a third proprietary and patented option, fixed off time (FOT). FOT is a simple change to the standard TM controller operation by adding few passive parts without increasing the expenses. All TM controllers feature an internal multiplier which substantially brings down the internal total harmonic distortion (THD), improves the performance of SMPS and subsequently EN61000-3-2 and other energy-saving regulations compliant.

The controllers provide superior safety, making SMPS rugged and compact eliminating the need of multiple external components.
