VacuTEC - Vacuum Plasma Surface Treatment
The purpose of surface treatment of polymer-based materials is to increase surface wettability through electrical discharge. The low surface energy of polymerbased substrates often leads to poor adhesion of inks, glues and
coatings. To obtain optimum adhesion, it is necessary to increase the surface energy of the substrate to just above that of the material to be applied. Surface treatment with Plasma results in improved surface adhesion properties.

VacuTEC creates a high frequency electrical discharge under low pressure
to treat the surface of various shaped products including profiles, keypads, mouldings and extrusions for improved adhesion of printing inks, glues and coatings.

In the treating chamber a vacuum is built up to between 2 and 12 mbar before an electrical discharge is created through the integrated electrode
elements. Treatment cycle times of between 2-120 seconds are normally
required depending on the material and shape of the item to be treated.
The VacuTEC is appreciated for its simplicity of operation, reliability in
production and fast process speed. Treating gasses such as Argon and
Oxygen can be applied, but in most cases this is not necessary due to the
intense effect created in the VacuTEC.

Two common applications for pre-treatment of automotive EPDM-profiles with Plasma are prior to applying flocking and slip-coating. In the flocking process, treatment is necessary to achieve a strong bond between the rubber and the adhesive used to attach the flock. For slip-coating it is necessary to treat prior to the spray process, to achieve good wettability and optimum adhesion properties of the coating.
Plasma treatemnt eliminates the need for expensive primers, hazardous chemical
treatments or mechanical abrasive brushing. The treatment achieved through Plasma discharge remains cost-effective without creating a threat to the
environment.

Standard and Customised Vacuum Plasma Treaters

Tantec RotoVAC plasma treater is designed for plasma treatment of small injection moulded plastic parts, without the need to place them in a jig or use complicated handling systems. With the RotoVAC drum design, simply fill the drum and place it in the vacuum chamber. The rotation will ensure that all parts are treated.

In the treating chamber a vacuum builds up to between 1 and 4 mbar before an electrical discharge is created through the integratedplasma electrode. Treatment cycle times are often short, between 20-180 seconds depending on the material and its formulation.

The RotoVAC plasma treater is appreciated for its simplicity of operation, reliability in production and fast process speed. Treating gases such as argon and oxygen
can be applied, but in most cases this is not necessary due to the high power exposed by the plasma discharge.

RotoVAC uses the advanced Tantec power generator HV-X series as power supply, and specially designed plasma transformers to provide voltage to the plasma electrodes. The rotating drum ensures that all parts are equally treated. The concept includes an extra drum which can be loaded during treatment and
simply exchanged with the one in use when the batch is completed.
