Double protection with one device

The DEK combines the advantages of the Dynamic Energy Storage DES and the Dynamic Energy Supply DEV in a single device. The energy storage of the DEK absorbs the released braking energy and ensures that it has always enough energy to bypass energy interruptions or in case of a power failure to bring the machine in a defined stop. Therefore, the DEK protects against the effects of a insufficient power supply and helps reducing energy consumption.

The Dynamic Energy Storage DES offers new opportunities to deal with braking energy. I.e. without power grid. A device, that can be used on almost all inverters and servo controllers that have a maximum DC link voltage of 800 VDC (UL). For a number of applications, this presents an opportunity to increase energy efficiency, save on resources while also protecting your nerves and even the electrical grid.

With similar exterior dimensions, these high capacities are achieved by modified electronics and significantly improved active cooling systems. Similar to the DES 2.0, the DES 3.0 has a standard energy storage device with about 1,600 watt-seconds while the DES 4.0 depends on external expansion modules (types EM 2.0). Both devices are conform with the requirements of UL.


The new devices DES 3.0 and DES 4.0 have self-teaching properties, similar to the DES 2.0. This means that they only require three cables to be connected to the respective DC link and the braking chopper output of the drive inverter and you are set to go i.e. no configuration, commissioning procedures or even programming this is incredibly simple, but true. Advanced planning is required in advance to analyse the application carefully. This means that the correct power for the device and the storage capacity can be precisely defined and used. It only remains to connect the DES to save electrical energy.

Energy storage system - DEV 3.0, DEV 4.0

Additional energy provided directly to the DC link of drive inverters and servo controllers are supplied by the DEV devices of Michael Koch GmbH. When power is interrupted, the devices with power rating 2.0 can supply two to 18 kilowatt-seconds. This means that many applications can to be brought to a safe standstill from where they may be restarted without difficulty once power is restored. Presenting devices that are capable to deliver more energy for extended periods or that stay cool in case of planned, and i.e. frequent power interruptions. In comparison to the DEV 2.0, the DEV 3.0 can accommodate higher loads of about 50 percent, and the DEV 4.0 is about twice as powerful. Both devices are conform with the requirements of UL.


The respective devices achieve these higher capacities by a modification to the electronic controllers and significantly improved active cooling systems. This means that the Dynamic Energy Supply DEV 3.0 is capable of supplying about two to 30 kilowatt-seconds of energy from its internal storage directly into the heart of a converter when unplanned power outages occur. The high power device types DEV 4.0 can supply around 40 kilowatt-seconds, however, the device itself is supplied without integrated storage. The energy values ​​of the DEV 3.0 and the DEV 4.0 may increase significantly, depending on the specifications of the application. For this reason, a detailed examination of the application is required as provided by the application consultants of Michael Koch GmbH in close cooperation with the customer.
