Lateral expansion joints are mainly used in pipelines with a change in the direction of flow which results in lateral rather than axial movement. The lateral expansion joint absorbs movement in all directions but only in one plane and to a limited degree. For absorption of larger lateral movement the optimal solution is the installation of a universal expansion joint.
