Whole body counter

Whole body counter
ORTEC Whole-body counting means radioactivity measurement present within the human body. The technique applies only to radioactive materials that are able to emit gamma rays. Beta emitters too can be measured in some conditions. Gamma emitters inside the human body can be detected and identified as long as the energy of these are high enough for them to escape the body before absorption or before it has some sort of interaction leading to energy loss. A scintillation detector or a semiconductor detector are generally used for such purposes. A person can sit, lie down or stand for this measurement. The single or multiple detectors can either be stationary or moving. The advantages of whole-body counting are that it measures body contents directly and does not rely on indirect methods. Its disadvantage is that it can only be used for gamma emitters.
