The combined differential and distance protection 7SL87 is a universal protection, control and automation device on the basis of the SIPROTEC 5 system.
Due to its high flexibility, it is suitable as selective protection equipment for overhead lines and cables with single- and multiended infeeds of all lengths with up to 6 ends. Transformers and compensating coils in the protection zone are also possible. The device is delivered with the aforementioned number of analog and binary inputs and outputs. Line circuit relays are widely used in cases of no active loads to interrupt circuits and prevent electromagnetic fields in circuits. During disconnected loads, only 2 to 20 VA usage is measured by the line circuit relay. As a result, the line circuit relay disconnects the cable to the supply voltage and switches over to extra-low voltage. When the loads are reconnected, the increase in usage is detected by the line circuit relay and switches back to the supply voltage.

The line circuit relay just switches off any unnecessary system components, and does not ensure a device for safe disconnection. The line circuit relay does not possess the capacity to detect consumers with electronic power supply units, e.g. electronically controlled vacuum cleaners. Such equipment can be practically connected to a base load resistor (PTC resistor) and enable the line circuit relay is reset to supply voltage.

Thermal overload relays are economic electromechanical protection devices for the main circuit. They offer reliable protection for motors in the event of overload or phase failure. Starter combinations are setup together with block contactors and mini contactors.
The thermal overload relays are three pole relays with bimetal tripping elements. The motor current flows through the bimetal tripping elements and heats them directly and indirectly. In case of an overload (over current), the bimetal elements bent as a result of the heating. This leads to a release of the relay and a change of the contacts switching position (95-96 / 97-98).

The thermistor motor protection relays CM-MSE, CM-MSS and CM-MSN are used to control motors equipped with PTC temperature sensors. The PTC temperature sensors are incorporated in the motor windings to measure the motor heating. This enables direct control and evaluation of various operating conditions. Depending on the products also ATEX approvals for use in hazardous areas are availabe.
ABB also offers PTC temperature sensors C011 (according to DIN 44081) which are suitable for embedding in motor windings.
