Load Banks can be defined as a self-contained, unitized, systematic device that includes load elements with control & accessory devices. Whereas the "real" load is served by the power source and uses the energy output of the source for some productive purpose, the load bank serves the power source, using its energy output to test, support or protect the power source.
Load banks are used in a variety of applications, including Factory Test of Diesel Generator Sets, Reduction of Wet Stacking Problems, Periodic exercising of Stand-by Generator Sets, UPS & Batteries Test, Load Optimization in Prime Power Applications, Factory Test of Turbines...
The three most common types of load banks are :

It is a hand transportable load bank with a voltage operating capacity of 28 V up to 32 V. The high quality apparatus is built with a manual operating capability of the load value through the rotary switches. The 19" Rack-Mount Load Bank Series ET1426 is manufactured by COUDOINT S.A.S. It has resistive loads that is structured of woven resistors and it has master load for on and off switch light indicators. This unit is integrated with 12 steps of force that has 1.12 Ω / 700 W and it has power connection of M12 terminal blocks. The fans are powered by external 28 VCC source with air cooling failure detection and load connections on the front and on the back panel features a safety sockets.

Coudoint presents Model ET1513 remote driven load bank with maximum current of 511 A and capacity of 14.3 kW. It offers 9 load steps, which are rated as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 amps under nominal operating voltage of 28 VCC. It provides natural air cooling and features electronic power switches. It has IP20 protection.

Selection of load step is by 9 parallel signals from an outside controller. Between control signals and load circuit, galvanic insulation is provided. Copper bar terminals are used for power connections with bolts and nuts. The bank features 2 omni-directional braked casters, 2 fixed casters and 2 carrying handles. It has dimensions (LxPxH) of 653x842x782 mm. It weighs 65 kg.

The Profibus-driven load bank is a product made by Countdoint Company. This product is used to switched loads that are used to load electrical equipment if it work or not. Batteries and power supplies are some of the applications of the product.

The unit have seven load sections that provides a resolution of 1kW and remote step selection through the unit's interface.

Aside from the above mentioned characteristics, this product have connection by 9-pin and syb-D connector that go along with the 28 VDC or 1430 Amps.

The external power supplies are required to the unit.
